“I felt I had to go participate or it would not have been good for me in the community,” Jungers said, referring to the sisters’ steadfast and lasting presence in Terre Haute—and the fact that a number of his patients came from the Woods.

The eye doctor then spun his office chair 180 degrees and faced the window behind his desk. He gazed out at the chilly courtyard of St. Joseph’s University Catholic Church, just across the street from his clinic. In October 1840, Mother Théodore had stopped at that same church and had attended Mass before traveling across the swollen Wabash River in a horse-drawn carriage and arriving at her rustic new home, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods. Her name—and her ancient community of nuns—still carried clout in Terre Haute. Jungers felt he had little choice but to help Mother Théodore, perhaps, reach sainthood.

“In fact,” Jungers said, aiming his index finger out the window, “there she is.”

He pointed to a small stone figurine standing in the church courtyard. The white statue, topped with a light brushing of snow, was a three-foot-high replica of a habit-wearing Mother Théodore. The statue’s eyes were fixed directly and constantly on the window of Dr. Jungers.
